Il mio villaggio aveva tanti problemi. Facevamo lunghe code per prendere l’acqua da un rubinetto.
My village had many problems.
We made a long line to fetch water from one tap.
Aspettavamo che altri ci donassero cibo.
We waited for food donated by others.
Chiudevamo a chiave le case molto presto a causa dei ladri.
We locked our houses early because of thieves.
Molti bambini lasciavano la scuola.
Many children dropped out of school.
Le ragazze giovani lavoravano come serve negli altri villaggi.
Young girls worked as maids in other villages.
I ragazzi giovani vagavano per il villaggio mentre altri lavoravano nelle fattorie della gente.
Young boys roamed around the village while others worked on people’s farms.
Quando il vento soffiava, la spazzatura si impigliava su alberi e staccionate.
When the wind blew, waste paper hung on trees and fences.
La gente si tagliava con i pezzi di vetro che venivano buttati in giro con noncuranza.
People were cut by broken glass that was thrown carelessly.
Poi, un giorno, il rubinetto si seccò e i nostri contenitori furono vuoti.
Then one day, the tap dried up and our containers were empty.
Mio padre andò di casa in casa chiedendo alla gente di partecipare alla riunione del villaggio.
My father walked from house to house asking people to attend a village meeting.
La gente si riunì sotto un grande albero e ascoltò.
People gathered under a big tree and listened.
Mio padre si alzò e disse “Dobbiamo lavorare insieme per risolvere i nostri problemi.”
My father stood up and said, “We need to work together to solve our problems.”
Una bimba di otto anni di nome Juma, che sedeva su un ramo, urlò: “Io posso aiutare a pulire.”
Eight-year-old Juma, sitting on a tree trunk shouted, “I can help with cleaning up.”
Un’altra donna disse “Le donne possono aiutarmi a coltivare il cibo.”
One woman said, “The women can join me to grow food.”
Un altro uomo si alzò e disse “Anche gli uomini scaveranno.”
Another man stood up and said, “The men will dig a well.”
Urlammo tutti all’unisono “Dobbiamo cambiare le nostre vite!” Da quel giorno lavorammo insieme per risolvere i nostri problemi.
We all shouted with one voice, “We must change our lives.”
From that day we worked together to solve our problems.
