Tindi weding’a nakushakama nankaka yindi wamubanda.

Tingi lived with his grandmother.


Weding’a nakuhemba ang’ombi na nkaka yindi.

He used to look after the cows with her.


Ifuku dimu mashidika enzili.

One day the soldiers came.


Asendeli ang’ombi nakuya nawu.

They took the cows away.


Tingi na nkaka yindi wamubanda atemukili nakuswama.

Tingi and his grandmother ran away and hid.


Aswamini mumpata kushika niwufuku.

They hid in the bush until night.


Mashidika afuntili cheng’i.

Then the soldiers came back.


Nkaka wamubanda waswekeli Tingi mumafu.

Grandmother hid Tingi under the leaves.


Mushidika wumu wamudatili namwendu, ilang’a wamweneni hohu.

One of the soldiers put his foot right on him, but he kept quiet.


Chikwawundili, Tingi na nkaka yindi wamubanda afumini

When it was safe, Tingi and his grandmother came out.


Abalakatili kwitala lufuchi-lufuchi.

They crept home very quietly.
