uBongani bekahlala nogogwakhe.

Tingi lived with his grandmother.


Bekavame ukutjheja iinkomo naye.

He used to look after the cows with her.


Ngelinye lamalanga amasotja eza.

One day the soldiers came.


Athatha iinkomo.

They took the cows away.


uBongani nogogwakhe babaleka bese babhaca.

Tingi and his grandmother ran away and hid.


Babhaca ehlathini kwaze kwaba sebusuku.

They hid in the bush until night.


Yeke-ke amasotja abuya.

Then the soldiers came back.


Ugogo wafihla uBongani ngaphasi kwamakari.

Grandmother hid Tingi under the leaves.


Omunye wamasotja wabeka inyawo phezu kwakaBonganii, kodwana wathula.

One of the soldiers put his foot right on him, but he kept quiet.


Nasele kuphephile, uBongani nogogwakhe baphuma.

When it was safe, Tingi and his grandmother came out.


Batotobela ekhaya ngaphandle kwetjhada.

They crept home very quietly.
