Într-un sat pe pantele muntelui Kenya în Africa de Est, o fetiță lucra la câmp cu mama ei. Numele ei era Wangari.
In a village on the slopes of Mount Kenya in East Africa, a little girl worked in the fields with her mother. Her name was Wangari.
Lui Wangari îi plăcea să stea în aer liber. În grădina de legume a familiei sale săpa pământul cu un cuțit mare. Îngropa semințe mici în pământul cald.
Wangari loved being outside. In her family’s food garden she broke up the soil with her machete. She pressed tiny seeds into the warm earth.
Timpul ei favorit era imediat după apus. Când se făcea prea întuneric ca să mai vadă plantele, Wangari știa că era timpul să meargă acasă. O lua pe cărările înguste peste câmpuri, traversând râurile în drumul ei.
Her favourite time of day was just after sunset. When it got too dark to see the plants, Wangari knew it was time to go home.
She would follow the narrow paths through the fields, crossing rivers as she went.
Wangari era un copil isteț și abia aștepta să meargă la școală. Dar mama și tatăl ei vroiau ca ea să stea și să ajute acasă. Când a împlinit șapte ani, fratele ei mai mare i-a convins pe părinți s-o lase să mergă la școală.
Wangari was a clever child and couldn’t wait to go to school. But her mother and father wanted her to stay and help them at home.
When she was seven years old, her big brother persuaded her parents to let her go to school.
Îi plăcea să învețe! Wangari a învățat din ce în ce mai mult cu fiecare carte pe care o citea. Era atât de bună la școală încât a fost invitată să studieze în Statele Unite ale Americii. Wangari era încântată. Vroia să știe mai multe despre lume.
She liked to learn! Wangari learnt more and more with every book she read. She did so well at school that she was invited to study in the United States of America.
Wangari was excited! She wanted to know more about the world.
În universitatea americană, Wangari a învățat multe lucruri noi. A studiat plantele și cum cresc. Și și-a amintit cum a crescut: jucându-se cu frații ei jocuri la umbra copacilor în frumoasele păduri Kenyene.
At the American university Wangari learnt many new things. She studied plants and how they grow. And she remembered how she grew: playing games with her brothers in the shade of the trees in the beautiful Kenyan forests.
Cu cât învăța mai mult, cu atât își dădea seama că îi iubea pe oamenii Kenyiei. Vroia ca ei să fie fericiți și liberi. Cu cât învăța mai mult, cu atât își amintea mai mult de casa ei din Africa.
The more she learnt, the more she realised that she loved the people of Kenya. She wanted them to be happy and free.
The more she learnt, the more she remembered her African home.
Când și-a terminat studiile, s-a reîntors în Kenya. Dar țara ei se schimbase. Ferme enorme se întinsesera peste pământ. Femeile nu aveau lemne să facă foc pentru gătit. Oamenii erau săraci și copiii erau flămânzi.
When she had finished her studies, she returned to Kenya. But her country had changed. Huge farms stretched across the land. Women had no wood to make cooking fires. The people were poor and the children were hungry.
Wangari a știut ce să facă. A învățat femeile cum să planteze copaci din semințe. Femeile au vândut copacii si au folosit banii să poarte de grijă familiilor lor. Femeile erau foarte fericite. Wangari le ajutase să se simtă puternice și rezistente.
Wangari knew what to do. She taught the women how to plant trees from seeds. The women sold the trees and used the money to look after their families. The women were very happy. Wangari had helped them to feel powerful and strong.
Cum timpul a trecut, noii copacu au devenit păduri, și râurile au început să curgă din nou. Mesajul lui Wangari s-a împânzit în toată Africa. Astăzi, milioane de copaci au crescut din semințele lui Wangari.
As time passed, the new trees grew into forests, and the rivers started flowing again. Wangari’s message spread across Africa. Today, millions of trees have grown from Wangari’s seeds.
Wangari a muncit din greu. Oamenii din întreaga lume au observat, și i-au dat un premiu renumit. Se numește Premiul Nobel pentru Pace, și ea a fost prima femeie africană care l-a primit vreodată.
Wangari had worked hard. People all over the world took notice, and gave her a famous prize. It is called the Nobel Peace Prize, and she was the first African woman ever to receive it.

Wangari died in 2011, but we can think of her every time we see a beautiful tree.
