Karisa yabanaga na nyirakuru.

Tingi lived with his grandmother.


Yajyaga aragirana inka na nyirakuru.

He used to look after the cows with her.


Umunsi umwe, abasirikari baraza.

One day the soldiers came.


Babatwarira inka.

They took the cows away.


Karisa na nyirakuru bariruka barabahunga.

Tingi and his grandmother ran away and hid.


Bihisha mu gihuru kugeza ijoro riguye.

They hid in the bush until night.


Nyuma abasirikari baragaruka.

Then the soldiers came back.


Nyirakuru amuhisha munsi y’amababi y’ibiti.

Grandmother hid Tingi under the leaves.


Umwe muri abo basirikari akandagira kuri Karisa ariko ntiyakoma.

One of the soldiers put his foot right on him, but he kept quiet.


Ba basirikare bamaze kugenda, Karisa na nyirakuru bava mu bwihisho.

When it was safe, Tingi and his grandmother came out.


Basubira iwabo bomboka.

They crept home very quietly.
