Tom atwara agataro k’imineke (ibitoki b’ihiye).

Tom carries a tray of ripe bananas.


Tom ajya ku isoko kugurisha imineke.

Tom goes to the market to sell bananas.


Abantu kw’isoko bari kugura imbuto.

People at the market are buying fruit.


Ariko ntan’umwe uri kugura imineke ya Tom. Bariguhitamo kugura imputo z’abagore.

But no one is buying Tom’s bananas. They prefer to buy fruit from women.


“Mu muryango mugari wacu, abagore bonyine nibo bagurisha imbuto,” abantu baravuga. “Uyu ni mugabo ki?” abantu barabaza.

“In our community, only women sell fruit,” people say. “What kind of a man is this?” people ask.


Ariko Tom ntago ahara. Arahamagara, “Gura imineke yange! Gura imineke yange iryoshye ihiye!”

But Tom does not give up. He calls, “Buy my bananas! Buy my sweet ripe bananas!”


Umugore umwe afata imineke myinshi kuva ku agataro. Yitegereza imineke yitonze.

One woman picks up a bunch of bananas from the tray. She looks at the bananas carefully.


Uwo mugore agura iyo imineke.

The woman buys the bananas.


Abandi bantu baza ku itandikiro. Bagura imineke ya Tom baranayirya.

More people come to the stall. They buy Tom’s bananas and eat them.


Vuba (Bidatinze), agataro kari ubusa. Tom abara abafaranga yakoreye.

Soon, the tray is empty. Tom counts the money he earned.


Ubundi TOm agura isabune, isukari, n’umugati. Ashyira ibintu mu agataro ke.

Then Tom buys soap, sugar, and bread. He puts the things in his tray.


Tom yikorera agataro arataha.

Tom balances the tray on his head and goes home.
